AO 2012: Federer out-classes Tomic
It’s not everyday you get to play your idol in your home Grand Slam in front of a packed Rod Laver Arena. It was the stuff of dreams for Bernard Tomic who faced the 4-times Australian Open champion, Roger Federer, in Round 4. Both players had played each other in last September’s Davis Cup tie with Federer emerging the victor, but nothing raises the stakes as much as a Grand Slam; it’s all about the player. The Maestro vs The Wonder Kid. Many had expected a match of surprises; … [Read More...]

London Calling: Ferrer Outplays Djokovic
"La furia roja" was brought to the O2 Arena last night in a somewhat suprising match which David Ferrer outplayed and outhit World Number 1 Novak Djokovic 6-3 6-1. Many in the crowd had come to see the World Number 1 but the performace Djokovic put out was far from being world number 1. Ferrer was simply untouchable playing some of his finest tennis with excellent court coverage and ferocious groundstroke winners that left Djokovic stranded. Unfortunately for Djokovic nothing seemed to … [Read More...]

London Calling: Berdych squeezes past Tipsarevic
Thrust into the limelight (or even blue light) of the gladiator arena that is the O2, Janko Tipsarevic battle valiantly against Tomas Berdych but was very unfortunate to lose his debut ATP World Tour Finals match to the Czech. A 2-6 6-3 7-6(6) win for Berdych has kept his qualification hopes alive. Playing infront of a relatively flat audience that only filed about 65% of the Arena both of these guys put on a show. It is never easy to play infront of such a muted crowd even their entrances … [Read More...]

London Calling: Back For More Tennis (and coffee!)
I'm back in an insomniac type of way. Just arrived with @StephinNZ and we're both in dire need of quadruple espressos. We're heading in for both Day and Night sessions again. The crowds are building already and things are getting set for another long day of Tennis. I'm pretty happy to see Janko Tipsarevic get his share of the limelight following Andy Murray's unfortunate withdrawal. What really has suprised and shocked me is listening to the crowd getting hyped up to seeing Murray! (Where … [Read More...]

It's not everyday you get to see two of the sport's greatest players lock horns in your local tournament but they do you cannot help but go along because you know that such a match is a rarity these days. The beating to the tune of 6-3 6-0 that Roger Federer dished out to Rafael Nadal at the ATP World Tour Finals is one that will stick in the minds of people for a very longtime. This was the 26th meeting with Nadal leading the way with a 17-8 record. Nadal has never beaten Federer indoors and … [Read More...]

Live Blog: O2 Practice Makes Perfect
Sitting by the practice courts everyone was expecting Andy Murray to turn up. Well, he didn't and the waiting crowd were pretty pissed off. Instead, Jo Wilfried Tsonga came to warm up. Now Novak Djokovic is out here hitting, fresh from picking up his World Number 1 crown, with Janko Tipsarevic. Smiles all round. Even Marian Vajda jokingly remarked "Novak is Number 1, he doesn't need to practice!". Who would argue with that? … [Read More...]

Live Blog: Day 3 of the Tennis from The O2
Watching tennis is a tiring business and every dedicated tennis fan needs their 8 hours of sleep. Yesterday proved a tough one to get through as although I was not ticketed I went along to the O2 to sample the atmosphere given the buzz that's usually generated when Andy Murray plays. Doing this on only four hours sleep is not the most recommended thing in the world and I thank Starbucks and the endless amounts of double espresso I consumed just to keep awake. Needless to say that the atmosphere … [Read More...]
